The Smoothest Album This Year - Wunna (Album Review)

Gunna’s album was highly anticipated, especially after the success of Drip Or Down 2. We all love the album, so Ahadu and I went back and forth sharing our thoughts in words, but you can hear us discuss the album on the last episode of FRAGMENT RADIO.

Gunna WUNNAThe king of flows Gunna released his second studio album titled WUNNA. Gunna is known for stealing many artists' songs with his smooth flows and vocals that leave you in a trance. He has created his own sound with the help of a couple huge producers Wheezy and Turbo. They both executive produced Gunna’s debut studio album “Drip or Drown 2” and are all over WUNNA with their patented sounds.Turbo is known for his guitar melodies and atmospheric sound with tumping 808s producing bangers such as “Sold Out Dates”, “Drip too Hard” and “Yosemite”. Wheezy best known for producing Meek Mill and Drake’s reuniting track “Going Bad” and many other Young Thug hits, with his unique and catchy melodies with snapping high hat patterns.

Before we were sent into lockdown, Gunna released a song and video to “SKYBOX”, a sound that was unexpected to a lot of Gunna fans. The video explained things, as Gunna was shown exploring the deserts of the middle east the same way he explored the sounds of this new song. Fast forward a few months, and the title track to his album WUNNA was released along with part one of the WUNNA documentary, which features a behind the scenes look at the recording process of this album. Gunna, Wheezy, Turbo, and many others are in Jamaica enjoying life, and having fun with the music they were creating. Following the release of the single and documentary snippet, the excitement grew. WUNNA is different from what we’re used to, but more of what we love. Slippery flows, lax vocals, and head-bobbing beats.

Gunna and Travis Scott are a lethal combination, teaming up on hits such as “Yosemite”, “Zoom” and Wheezy produced track “Hot”. They allied on this latest project with another “Float like Mohammed Ali” type beat called “TOP FLOOR”. It sounds like “HOT” part two, with the triumphant horn melody and Wheezy production. The smoothest track on the album has to be “NASTY GIRL” with the ignant bass and floating percusion. The track transitions nicely into “ON CAMERA” where the tempo picks up and the track gets reckless. The title track “WUNNA” was exactly what fans expected to hear from Gunna unlike the other track that came out prior to the album titled “SKYBOX”. The album opens up with “ARGENTINA” with that beautiful guitar sample. “MET GALA” and “MOTW” are typical Gunna - more of what we love

- Ahadu

In addition to the dope tracks that Ahadu mentioned, some of my favourite songs are “MOTW”, “DOLLAZ ON MY HEAD” and “DON’T PLAY AROUND”. My favourite Gunna songs are ones like this, they aren’t too aggressive, and just chill songs to vibe out to.

Overall, I’m happy with this project. There definitely were a few songs I could have done without, “GIMMICK” and “ADDYS” come to mind. That being said though, all the songs that we’ve discussed were dope right off the bat, and I imagine they’ll grow on me even more as we slowly start spending more time outside/with the sun.
